10 Spooky Halloween Ideas for Teaching in October

Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s hard to ignore the excitement that comes with this time of year.

Let’s bring some of that excitement into the classroom with Halloween-themed activities, books, math practice, and more.

Keep reading for some fun Halloween ideas to make October a little more memorable for you and your students!

Halloween Decorations

Decorate your classroom with Halloween cutouts. Grab these pre-cut ghosts, bats, and pumpkins to help with a quick math activity. Give each student a different number and a Halloween shape. They will write all the different ways they could make that number.

You can also grab some table cloths to decorate any tables.

Give your students a chance to decorate a pumpkin and hang on your classroom door or anywhere inside your classroom.

There are so many things you can do to decorate the classroom. Be creative and involve your students!

Halloween Money Centers

Practice money skills with these Halloween Money Center Activities.

Students will practice skip counting like coins up to one dollar.

Orange-themed Day

Host an orange-themed day where everything is orange!

Encourage students to wear orange, make your copies on orange paper, and serve orange snacks or drinks. If you can’t serve food and drinks, you can also encourage students to bring orange foods in their lunches that day!

If you need snack ideas:

  • oranges
  • carrots
  • cheese
  • goldfish
  • cheese puffs
  • orange Jell-O
  • orange cupcakes

Another fun thing to do is to give students orange school supplies. It might be time for a new pencil!

The Math Witch: Doubles, Doubles, Boils, and Troubles

Read the book The Math Witch: Doubles, Doubles, Boils, and Troubles and discuss the numbers found in the book.

Create witch hat cutouts and have students count them.

Students can draw their own witch and show a doubles fact.

Be creative and see what you can come up with!

Candy Jar

Put candy corn or other small pieces of candy in a jar. Have students guess the number of candy pieces in the jar. Put multiple jars together during the month to keep your students guessing all month long!

Plastic Spider Counters

Use these Plastic Spiders as counters during October. These spiders are great because they are small and don’t make a lot of noise on desks or the floor! It brings a little holiday fun to math class and go great with my math fact games for Halloween.

Halloween Practice - Two Digit Addition and Subtraction

Give your students practice solving two-digit addition and subtraction problems using base ten blocks. These worksheets are perfect for homework, early finisher activities, substitute plans, morning work, and group work review.

October Word Problem Task Cards

Practice word problems with these October Word Problem Task Cards. Students can solve basic facts, 2-digit numbers, or 3-digit numbers. Each version is slightly different!

What Should My Teacher Be for Halloween?

Give your students a picture of you and have them pick what you should be for Halloween. They will draw your costume and then write a few sentences about it. I took their costume ideas and made it into a class book. They loved reading it all year!

Add some of these books to your library during October to get your students reading about math.
