2-Digit Addition Strategies
I used to teach 2-digit addition the same way to every kid in my room.
Same strategy, same steps, same order.
It worked great for some of them.
But for others, I watched the same confused look show up every single time, and I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t clicking when I’d already explained it twice.
Eventually I realized the problem wasn’t the kid. It was that I was only giving them one way in.
3 questions I asked myself before picking a strategy
- Does this kid need to see it, or can they already picture it in their head? (If they need to see it, base ten blocks are where I start. Physical, visual, no guessing.)
- Can they do the math mentally but fall apart the second I ask them to write it down? (That’s usually a break apart kid. Breaking the numbers into tens and ones first gives their mental math somewhere to land on paper.)
- Are they ready to let go of the blocks, but not quite ready for pure numbers on their own? (Open number lines are the bridge. Enough structure to feel safe, enough abstraction to prep them for regrouping without manipulatives.)
2 signs a kid needs a different strategy than the one you taught
- They can do it perfectly with support (blocks, a number line, you standing next to them) but freeze the second they’re on their own.
- They land on a right answer sometimes and a wrong one other times, using the exact same steps, which usually means they’re guessing their way through instead of reasoning through it.
