2-Digit Addition Mistakes
I used to hand back exit tickets, see a kid missed 2-digit addition, and have absolutely no idea what actually broke down.
Was it the strategy? A place value mix-up? Or just a careless slip on an otherwise solid day?
I’d end up reteaching the whole thing from scratch because I didn’t have a fast way to tell the difference.
Here’s what I’ve learned actually shows up in those missed problems:
3 reasons a 2-digit addition mistake happens
- A place value mix-up (ones and tens got tangled somewhere in the regrouping)
- A skipped step (especially using break apart or open number line strategies, where one missed step throws off the whole answer)
- A careless error, not a real misunderstanding at all
The tricky part is those three look almost identical on paper. A wrong answer is a wrong answer until you know what to look for.
2 things I used to try that didn't really fix it
- Reteaching the whole strategy from scratch, even when the kid only needed help with one small piece
- Just handing over more practice problems and hoping repetition would sort it out
Both ate up the time I didn’t have, and neither one told me what was actually going wrong.
1 thing I wish I had to help identify how to help students
- I put together a full 2-digit addition system, teaching videos, practice, and reteaching support, built around three strategies: base ten blocks, break-apart, and open number lines. The piece I’m most excited about is a set of error-analysis checklists, one for each strategy, that walk you straight from “this is wrong” to “here’s exactly why, and here’s what to try next.”
