Making Ten Strategy for Math Fact Fluency
Students need to understand the making ten strategy to help solve mental math problems.
The making ten strategy is adding numbers together that add up to 10.
It is important for students to understand how to decompose numbers to make a ten. This helps with their math fact fluency and solving other problems.
Making Ten Facts
- 0 + 10 = 10
- 1 + 9 = 10
- 2 + 8 = 10
- 3 + 7 = 10
- 4 + 6 = 10
- 5 + 5 = 10
- 6 + 4 = 10
- 7 + 3 = 10
- 8 + 2 = 10
- 9 + 1 = 10
- 10 + 0 = 10
How to Teach the Making Ten Strategy
I teach the making ten strategy by using a rainbow.
Start with the outer band and color it red. The red represents 0 + 10 and 10 + 0.
Then move to the second band. Color it orange. The orange represents 1 + 9 and 9 + 1.
Continue with the other colors and numbers until the rainbow is finished.
Yellow – 2 + 8 and 8 + 2
Green – 3 + 7 and 7 + 3
Blue – 4 + 6 and 6 + 4
Purple – 5 + 5
The rainbow helps students visualize the numbers that add to equal 10.
Making Ten Math Fact Games
After the students learn the strategy using the rainbow, I give the students plenty of time to practice using different games.
