Math Games with Cards
Addition Showdown
Materials:
- One deck of cards
Preparation:
- Remove all face cards so you are left with only the cards 2-10 for each suit.
- This game is best for 2 players but could be played with 3 players.
Game Play:
- Divide the cards equally among each player.
- Keep the cards face down in one pile.
- Both players turn over the top two cards from their pile and place them face up in the center.
- Each player adds the values of their cards together.
- The player with the highest sum gets to keep all four cards. He or she will put those cards at the bottom of their pile.
- If there is a tie, it is a Showdown! Each player places three more cards face down in front of the cards they just turned over. Then both players turn over one more card. The player with the highest card wins all the cards and puts those at the bottom of their pile.
- Play continues until one player has all the cards or until time is up.
Target Number
Materials:
- One deck of cards
Preparation:
- Remove all face cards so you are left with only the cards 2-10 for each suit.
- This game can be played with 2-4 players.
Game Play:
- Pick one player to be the target setter.
- The target setter will pick a number between 10 and 30 to be the target number.
- Deal five cards to each player, including the target setter.
- Each player will add the numbers on their cards to get as close to the target number as possible. All cards do not need to be used.
- The player that is closest to the target number gets to be the target setter in the next round.
Math Games with Dice
Race to 100
Materials:
- Two dice
- Whiteboard for each player
- Dry erase marker for each player
Preparation:
- This game can be played with 2-4 players.
Game Play:
- The oldest player goes first.
- The first player rolls the two dice and adds the numbers together. Write the sum on your whiteboard.
- The next player rolls the two dice, adds the numbers together, and writes the sum on his or her whiteboard.
- Play continues until all players have taken their first turn.
- Each player will roll one die on each remaining turn and add that number to their number written on the whiteboard.
- Play continues with each player taking turns rolling one die and adding the numbers to their running totals.
- The first player to reach 100 is the winner!
Math Games with Dominoes
Domino Memory
Materials:
- One set of dominoes
Preparation:
- This game can be played with 2-4 players.
Game Play:
- Lay all the dominoes face down in a grid.
- The shortest player goes first.
- Turn over two dominoes at a time and add the values on each domino.
- If the dominoes have the same added value, he or she gets to keep the dominoes and go again. If the dominoes do not have the same added value, the dominoes are returned to the grid and the next player takes his or her turn.
- Continue taking turns until all matches are made. Some dominoes might not be used.
- The player with the most matches is the winner!
