Task Cards: 3 Efficient Ways to Differentiate Word Problems
Are you in need of addition and subtraction word problem task cards for every month? These task cards are motivating and engaging for your students to solve addition and subtraction word problems on their own. There are many ways to use these word problem task cards in your own classroom.
This is just what I needed! I have a busy weekend and not much time to plan for next week… this is going to be a great activity without so much planning!
What?
What are task cards?
- Task cards are problems written on small cards that students can solve individually. Task cards can be made for any subject or any standard.
- Most times, there are answer sheets included with task cards. But answer sheets are not always necessary. Students could solve problems in math journals or another piece of paper. Doesn’t have to be fancy!
I love using this resource with my small groups during the month of February. I like how there are subtraction and addition word problems mixed together. This allowed great discussion about what operation we would need to use.
Why?
Why would I use task cards?
- Task cards are great if your students need to get up and move around.
- Students are engaged in solving problems when the themes are motivating.
- Task cards can provide a chance for students to review what they’ve learned in class.
- Task cards are wonderful when you need to display one problem at a time. Students will not be distracted by other problems and can focus on one at a time.
These are great all of my students aren’t reading yet but…its’s nice to have cards like these to go to for “word problem” of the day. Thanks for sharing!
How?
How could I use task cards in my classroom?
- You can place the task cards around the room and students could rotate to the different problems at their own pace.
- Play Scoot! Place the task cards on desks. Each student starts at a different task card. The teacher rings a bell when it is time to move to the next problem. Scoot works best when students can take similar amounts of time to solve each task card.
- Leave for a substitute to use.
- Work in small groups. Use the task cards as a way to help small groups of students solve problems.
- Place in an early finisher tub. Students can solve the problems when they are finished with their other work.
Fun, engaging way to practice addition and subtraction. Love resources that get my students out of their seats!
Addition and Subtraction Word Problems for the Whole School Year!
I have created addition and subtraction word problems for every month – September through June.
I have 3 different levels (numbers to 20, 2-digit numbers, and 3-digit numbers) for each month.
The different levels provide differentiation in your classroom and gives you some flexibility and choice in how you use these task cards in your classroom.
Some students might need a review or some might need an extension and you don’t have to do any additional work if you have the different levels in your resources.
Check out the links below for the bundles for each month. (If you don’t need all the levels, you can find the individual products within the bundle pages.)
I loved how it allowed me to differentiate!
These monthly word problems are a lifesaver!!!
